This love for junk food like pizzas and burgers are giving a headache to Indian Government as there is a sharp rise in obesity cases in a couple of years. The government has taken many steps in previous years also but none of them could help to keep obesity cases below the red line. The Government has ordered that sale of junk food should be banned totally in school canteens and imposed heavy taxes on junk food.Now FSSAI ( Food Safety and Standards Authority of India ) has also proposed to levy a heavy tax on processed food and beverages containing artificial sugar.
According to a study by FSSAI, the problems of overweight and obesity is increasing due to urbanization and unhealthy diet. Studies suggest that the consumption of Fat, Sugar, and Salt ( FSS ) among Indians is very high due to this they are very prone to have obesity and overweight problems.
Health advisor suggests that we should use unsaturated fat even then we use trans fat which is very harmful to our body as it increases the cholesterol level and hence increases the chance of heart attack. We should not derive more than 10% of our total energy from added sugars. According to WHO report, Indian consume twice as much salt as they are recommended to consume in a year. Excess sodium intake is related to hypertension and cardiovascular (CV) risk. According to WHO as well as ICMR NIN, added salt should be restricted to about 5-6g/day.
